\r\n The juniper, powerful diuretic, is a plant with a DETOX<\/strong> function \r\n par excellence.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n To remove the "miasmas" from their houses and purify them, the Romans \r\n used to burn juniper branches.This word evokes the need for a DETOX<\/strong>  in \r\n order to free oneself from its miasmas.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Juniper (Juniperus communis<\/em>) takes its name from the Celtic wordJunepru<\/em>s \r\n which means 'pungent' in relation to the very particular flavour of the \r\n berries.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Its branches give shelter to hares, when they are pursued by a hunting \r\n dog, because their characteristic scent confuses them.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n It is a bushy shrub, 50 cm to 5 metres high, which grows on moors, \r\n wasteland and limestone soils throughout Europe, from north to south. \r\n Its root is strong, twiggy.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Its stem is branched from ground level, forming a bush.Its bark is \r\n brown, reddish and rough.Its leaves are narrow, rigid, evergreen, and \r\n end in a sharp point, which makes them look like needles.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n The fruit of the juniper is a fleshy, blackish-blue berry, the size of a \r\n pea, which contains three seeds.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Apart from medicinal use, juniper berries are used to make a famous \r\n brandy, "Gin", as well as in cooking, to enhance the taste of certain \r\n dishes, for example sauerkraut.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Everything about juniper is good, therapeutically: wood, leaves, berries \r\n (from which a precious essential oil is extracted).\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Since ancient times, juniper has been used mainly for its spectacular \r\n diuretic action.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Dioscorides, the physician of the emperor Nero, advises juniper "to \r\n make one urinate<\/em>", for the stomach and for the bronchi.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Cato, in the work "De rustica<\/em>", indicates juniper wine "to \r\n provoke urine<\/em>" and to dispel stomach aches as well as swelling of the \r\n belly.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Matthiole advises juniper as a diuretic, depurative, antirheumatic and \r\n disinfectant of the urinary tract.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n A century ago, the famous Abbot Sebastian Kneipp made juniper an \r\n essential remedy for purifying the blood (excellent DETOX <\/strong>action) \r\n and in skin diseases.\r\n <\/p>\r\n

\r\n Flemish herbalists made the legendary "Haarlem Oil" against rheumatism \r\n by mixing juniper essential oil with bay laurel oil.\r\n <\/p>\r\n
