Ginger and Detox: the perfect combination

Being very active in case of hepatic insufficiency and digestive disorders inducing meteorism and bloating, ginger is a plant DETOX  par excellence.

Native to India, ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a tropical plant universally used in cooking.

It resembles a gladiolus, with leaves standing like the blades of a sword, arranged around a single stem ending in a yellow orchid-like inflorescence.

The active ingredients are concentrated in the rhizomes:

  • Gingerol
  • Gingerone
  • Phellandrene
  • Linalool
  • Borneol
  • Camphene
  • Citronelol

These grey, fleshy, gnarled rhizomes, called sringavero in the Sanskrit language (literally: with the appearance of deer antlers) are ground into a powder and used in the composition of the famous Indian curry.

The English, as we know, who occupied this vast country for a long time, make extensive use of ginger to flavour their drinks (ginger beer, ginger ale, ginger brandy) or to give that unmistakably peppery taste to the biscuits and confectionery (after having candied it) that accompany their legendary five o'clock tea.

West Indian and African cuisine also use ginger, in combination with bird's eye chilli, to enhance the taste of dishes, aid digestion and ...give certain ideas to diners (in connection with its aphrodisiac action).

These uses are very old since in antiquity already, Pliny underlines that ginger is a tonic plant for the stomach, Dioscorides saying that it revives the ardour of old men.

Much later, Fioraventi and the Salerno school indicate that it excites love powerfully.

Its vocation as a spice and medicinal plant justifies that ginger was very early the object of an intense (and lucrative) trade between the East and the West, transported by caravans and then by sea.

When to use ginger in your detox?

Today, ginger is still an appreciated spice, but it is a food supplement in its own right with multiple indications:

  • General fatigue (physical and mental)
  • Difficult digestion
  • Flatulence
  • Bloating
  • Hepatobiliary insufficiency
  • Intestinal infections
  • Sexual asthenia
  • Male erectile dysfunction
