Histidine is a basic amino acid that was long considered essential during growth until the work of LAIDLAW (1987) was able to demonstrate that it could now be classified as one of the essential amino acids in adults.
Functions of histidine
This amino acid precursor to HISTAMINE, essential for haemoglobin synthesis and tissue repair has many functions:
- It allows the detoxification of heavy metals(nickel, tin, aluminium and corrects excess copper and iron).
- It stimulates the secretion of gastric juices and also enters into the composition of trypsin, a pancreatic enzyme which allows the digestion of proteins.
- Anti-anxiety agent, it plays the role of a natural tranquilliser, like tryptophan and glycine.
- It stimulates libido in both men and women (once converted to histamine, it becomes the chemical responsible for triggering orgasm).
- It participates in the protection of nerves by ensuring the repair and maintenance of myelin.
- It has a preventive effect on cataracts.
- It fights against joint pain, rheumatism and especially rheumatoid arthritis.
- It has a corrective effect on deafness.
